General Searches

Quick Forms Lookup

Look up common forms for a designated company. Because the default form is "ALL," this is also a general-purpose search. This is a very valuable search if you already know the exact name of a company, but is less useful for entities such as mutual funds, because the company name field is only 20 characters long. Given that many mutual fund names start off similarly, users might want to use the Archives search (right), with a two-word phrase from the latter part of the fund name or the CIK as the search term.

Users should also note that because this search looks for a company name, and returns a filing each time it encounters that name, it may return more filings than the equivalent Search on Archives. The additional filings are duplicate "hits" on certain filings involving third parties, because these filings are listed in the database once for each company involved.

Search the EDGAR Archives***

A keyword (WAIS) search of all the header information in all the filings in the database. For best results on most company names, users should make use of the connectors, which are demonstrated on the bottom of the search screen. For example, to search on "Washington Energy," use the keyphrase

Washington ADJ Energy

Otherwise, the search will try to retrieve all filings with headers containing "Washington" (including street names in company addresses) and all filings with headers containing "Energy."

In cases where very large numbers of "hits" are found, this search will truncate in one of two ways:

  1. At 150 records (filings)

  2. OR

  3. At 1000 "hits" (occurrences of search terms)

Users can also use the company CIK (see below) as a search term.

Special-Purpose Searches
  • CIK (Central Index Key) and Ticker Symbol Lookup

  • The CIK can be useful in the EDGAR Archives search (above). Look up the company name and use the CIK (including the leading zeroes - e.g., 0000111111) as a keyword.

  • Current Events Analysis

  • Analysis of forms filed in the previous week: you can check 10-K (annual) and 10-Q quarterly) reports, proxies, and others.

  • Mutual Funds Retrieval

  • Pre-written list of mutual funds. If a certain fund has not yet filed electronically, it's flagged with "NF" so you don't waste your time picking a fund that is not yet in the database.

  • Prospectus search

  • Serves all "485" forms, such as the 485APOS, 485BPOS, and 485B24E.

  • Exhaustive Mutual Funds Search

  • Search of all the filing mutual funds in the database This is a batch job, really, so please be patient if you select this option. Please limit the time frame on the search.

  • Schedule 13D Ownership Report

  • Look up Schedule 13D Ownership filings with an optional narrowing of the search to a particular date range. An attempt is made to give the name of the target company - not foolproof, but interesting nonetheless.

  • Executive Compensation Test

  • An example of how the executive compensation information can be extracted from a proxy (DEF 14A) filing.
